Key Stage 2 (Junior department)
This Key Stage includes children from Year 3 (ages 7-8) up to Year 6 (ages 10-11). In KS2 the curriculum builds on the children’s experiences in Key Stage 1.
In KS2 the children continue to work from the National Curriculum. The core subjects of English, Maths and Science are given the most teaching time and are prioritised. In addition we teach all other subjects including Computing, History, Geography, Spanish, Music, Art, PE, Design Technology, Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) and RE.
Computing, History, Geography, Art, DT, PSHE are often taught through a thematic or topic approach in a creative, practical and interactive way. We change our topics on average every half term. Some topics may be whole school topics like for instance our Multicultural topic or Healthy and Active weeks.
We also aim to provide each year group with a wide range of experiences to further enrich the topics. These experiences would include visitors coming to school or trips to places relevant to the topic. Class teachers work in close consultation with our team of support staff of Teaching Assistants.
Our KS2 department continues to give the highest priority to the teaching of reading and phonics for those children who still need this support. We use a wide range of reading schemes, one of the main ones being the Oxford Reading Scheme.
Religious Education is also very important in our school and we follow the Archdiocesan Scheme called ‘Come and See’.
