St Robert Bellarmine – Living Our Mission

Our Mission Statement tells us that “We are God’s work of art.” As our patron saint, St Robert Bellarmine gives us an example of how we can put our Mission Statement into action every day.

1. Follow the light of Jesus – St Robert dedicated his whole life to following Jesus. As a Jesuit priest, his teaching and preaching encouraged people to know, love and imitate Jesus. 

2. Work to the best of our abilities – St Robert worked hard at his studies and became a gifted teacher of theology. He used his intelligence and talents to teach others about the Catholic faith and eventually became a Doctor of the Church.

3. Be friends with everyone – St Robert lived at a time when Christians strongly disagreed about religion. In his writings about these disagreements, he tried to avoid an aggressive approach, instead explaining his beliefs through reason and Church teaching. This reminds us that we can disagree with others while still treating them with respect. 

4. Help each other – St Robert believed that Christians should not focus on collecting riches but should live simply and charitably. He taught that what we have should be used in ways that lead us towards God and help others. 

5. Include everyone – St Robert wanted the Catholic faith to be understood not only by scholars but by ordinary people too. He wrote a short catechism explaining Christian teaching simply and clearly, which became one of his most popular works. 

6. Be responsible for your own actions – St Robert taught that changing the world begins with changing ourselves. He encouraged people to reflect seriously on their actions and taught that true reform begins with the conversion of our own hearts

7. Everybody to do their best in every way – Even when St Robert was given important and demanding responsibilities as a cardinal and bishop, he continued striving to live his own vocation faithfully and well. He believed that every part of our lives should be lived with faith. 

8. Be happy – For St Robert, true happiness came from knowing and loving God rather than from wealth, possessions or status. He taught that finding God was more important than worldly success.

9. Parents, teachers and children support each other – St Robert spent much of his life teaching and guiding others. He taught students, supported those training for religious life and was spiritual director to Jesuit students, including the young St Aloysius Gonzaga. Later, as Archbishop of Capua, he visited the parishes in his care every week. 

10. Be respectful – St Robert believed in explaining his faith clearly without being unnecessarily aggressive towards those who held different beliefs. His example teaches us to listen, speak thoughtfully and treat other people with dignity, even when we disagree.

St Robert Bellarmine showed through his life that our faith is something we live out through our actions. He used his gifts to teach, served the people entrusted to his care, lived simply, reflected on his own actions and placed Jesus at the centre of his life.

As members of St Robert Bellarmine School, we follow the example of our patron saint when we do our best, help and include others, take responsibility for our actions, show respect and allow the light of Jesus to guide us.
