Cultural Capital in Geography

In the context of geography, cultural capital refers to the knowledge, skills, and experiences that children bring to their learning and understanding of  geography.

Cultural capital is an important aspect of geography education at St Robert Bellarmine because it can help to broaden children's horizons and enhance their knowledge of the world. Children who have more cultural capital are more likely to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of geography, which can motivate them to pursue geography as a subject or career in the future.

We aim to develop cultural capital in our students by providing a range of experiences and opportunities to learn about geography. It includes the cultural experiences linked to the locality and beyond, such as fieldwork, visiting museums, exposure to different maps, and being aware of the geography around them and beyond in their daily lives. We want our pupils to develop a sense of agency and responsibility, as well as pride in their local community. We spend time understanding current affairs happening around the globe and invite children to bring their knowledge to all discussions.

Overall, developing cultural capital in geography is important for providing children with the skills and experiences they need to become informed, creative, and culturally aware individuals.
