Cultural Capital in RE

In the context of Religious Education, cultural capital refers to the knowledge and experiences that children bring to their learning and understanding of RE.

Cultural capital is an important aspect of RE education at St Robert Bellarmine because it can help to broaden children's horizons and enhance their knowledge of the world and their place in it. Children who have more cultural capital are more likely to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of their faith and others, which can motivate them to pursue RE as a subject or career in the future.

We aim to develop cultural capital in our students by providing a range of experiences and opportunities to learn about RE. It includes the cultural experiences linked to the locality and beyond, such as visiting places of worship (including those of other faiths), exposure to different religious and cultural experiences (such as visits from those practicing Hinduism, Judaism and Islam) and being aware of the different religious experiences around them and beyond in their daily lives. We want our pupils to develop a sense of agency and responsibility, as well as pride in their local church community. We spend time understanding current affairs happening around the globe and invite children to bring their knowledge to all discussions.

Overall, developing cultural capital in RE is important for providing children with the appreciation and experiences they need to become informed, creative, and culturally aware individuals.
