Substantive Concepts in Computing

At St Robert Bellarmine Primary School, substantive concepts in computing refer to the fundamental and essential ideas and themes that are explored and threaded through the computing curriculum. These concepts provide a framework for learning and understanding the principles of computing. We ensure that our children are also taught how to keep safe online; as well as being taught as a discrete unit, this element of computing is intertwined with other curriculum areas and throughout the computing curriculum. The substantive concepts in the St Robert Bellarmine  computing curriculum include:

Computing Systems and Networks

  • what a computer is and how its constituent parts function as a whole
  • how networks can be used to share and retrieve information
  • the internet and how to work safely and responsibly online
  • different hardware in computers and how they work together

Programming

  • interpreting, creating and evaluating algorithms
  • programming to accomplish specific goals
  • detecting and correcting errors

Data and Information

  • collecting, analysing, evaluating, presenting data and information

Creating Media

  • planning, creating and evaluating computer artefacts
  • communicating and collaborating online
  • evaluating online content
  • respectful and responsible communication
