History

Anglo Saxon Settlements

We used Digimaps to help us find where Anglo Saxons settled in this country. We researched common Anglo Saxon place names and then looked for settlements with those names in the south east of England, which was were the Anglo Saxons originally settled, and then in the north west near where we live.

Technology

Trashion Show

"In year 4 we don't do fashion - we are fashion!"

We all strutted our stuff on the catwalk with our recycled designs. The challenge had been to take an old piece of clothing and turn it into something new. Some great creations were on show.

Art

Mixing Watercolours

In Year 4, we have extended our knowledge of the colour wheel by adding tertiary colours. We have learnt how we can mix primary colours to produce secondary and tertiary colours. We will now use this knowledge when we produce our Hundertwasser inspired dreamscapes.

Science

Escape Rooms

Working against the clock, year 4 had to use all of their science knowledge to solve the clues and unlock the boxes before time ran out. They worked well as teams and some of us even beat the clock!

Technology

Textile Pouches

We worked with Steph to design and make textile pouches. We began by looking at different pouches that used an applique design. We then practised different stitches before we decided upon the ones we wanted to use. With the help of Steph, we then designed and made our own pouches using felt. Finally, we evaluated our designs against the success criteria we set out. We had a great day and we are all very proud of the outcomes.

Play-in-a-Day

Macbeth

We started the term working with Dave from Altru Drama who introduced us to the Shakespeare play Macbeth. We learnt about the history of the play, the curse as well as the characters involved and the plot. We all took on different roles and performed for the rest of the school at the end of the day. It was a great way to start our new English text.

Reconciliation

The Light of Christ

Tuesday December 5th was a very special day for the children of Year 4 as they received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. They delivered a beautiful and very reflective service of which they should all feel very proud. The theme of the service was the Light of Christ burning within each of us and how through doing things wrong we begin to let the light dim. However, through the gift of reconciliation we are able to say we are sorry for the things we have done wrong and allow the light of Christ to burn brightly within us once again.

Book Share

This week we were very proud to be able to show our parents the work that we have been doing so far this year. They spent time looking through our books and we explained the work we have been doing.

Collective Worship

Remembrance Day

On Friday we held a collective worship in class on the theme of Remembrance Day. We thought about the brave people who made the greatest sacrifice for our country.

Jesus said, “Greater love has no man than this; that he lay down his life for his friends.”
Soldiers have shown this great love, by dying to keep our country safe.

Let us pray together:
God our Father, your Son Jesus gave up His life to free us from the power of sin and death.
He showed us that the greatest love is in giving up one’s life for others.
Today we remember those who fought and died for our freedom.
We ask you to bless and console them together with their families.
Help us to understand the sacrifices they made in leaving their loved ones to face the horrors
of war.
We pray that we never forget those who fought, suffered and died that we might have the
freedom and peace we enjoy today.
May we never forget their generosity.
Amen

Odd Socks Day

'Make a Noise About Bullying'

This year, lots of schools, like us, took part in odd socks day to promote Anti-bullying Week. The idea was for each of us to be able to express ourselves freely; to appreciate that we all unique individuals and to accept we are all different yet we are all equal. There were some amzing combinations to be seen: odd colours, odd patterns; odd lengths and even odd numbers of socks were all worn.

P.S.H.E.

Anti-Bullying Assembly

Year 4 presented our anti-bullying assembly on the importance of words when we speak in the real world and in the online world. They explained that being unique and different from everyone else is not a reason for us to be bullied or ridiculed. Here in St Robert Bellarmine we want to embrace difference, celebrate diversity and accept everyone for who they are. We want to make the right choices and choose to show respect to everyone we meet.

Confirmation

As part of our topic 'called', Fr Faustinus came into cxlass and talked to us about the sacrament of confirmation. He talked about the different signs and symbols involved in the ceremony and particularly the importance of the oil of chrism. He then led us in a collective worskip during which we renewed our baptismal vows.

Science

Investigating Teeth

We have recently been learning about the different teeth that we have and the different jobs that they do. We have also learnt how important it is that we look after them properly. We set up an investigation to find out the effect that different liquids have on our teeth.

PSHE

Hello Yellow

On Friday we wore something yellow to come to school. This was so we could raise awareness about looking after our mental health and wellbeing. As you can see from the smiles on our faces, we had a lovely day! We talked about the importance of looking out for our mental and physical health and explored some of the things that we can do to help.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

We celebrated the Macmillan Coffee Morning by bringing in cakes and selling them in class. Our school councillors organised everything and we really enjoyed these treats. Thank you to everyone involved for your amazing generosity.

History

Mere Tun Trip

As part of our topic on history topic about the Anglo-Saxons, Year 4 recently visited Martin Mere and their settlement of Mere Tun. Here we experienced life in Anglo-Saxon times. During the visit we went foraging in the woods for materials that would be useful in camp, we weaved a pig pen from willow, we how to make coil pots from clay and we learnt to defend the village from Viking attack. We all had an amazing day and learnt so much.

Maths

4-digit Numbers

We began exploring 4-digit numbers during our maths lessons. We used place value counters and place value charts to make different numbers before writing them in digits and words. We the used our problem solving skills to help identify different mystery numbers.

Religion

Cafod Workshop

Today we had some special visitors who talked to us about the work of Cafod around the world. We learnt about things that we can do to help support their work and help others who are much less fortunate than us.

British Values

Democracy

We presented the first class assembly of the year when we talked to the whole school about the British value of democracy. We explained the origins of democracy in Ancient Greece and how our country works as a dmeocracy. We then talked about how our the election of our school councilors follows a democratic process. We then introduced the members of this year's School Council.

Maths

Roman Numerals

We started the year learning about Roman numerals. We used matchsticks to form the numerals and learnt how to represent numbers from 1 to 100. We learnt how to write our dates of birth using Roamn numerals.

Art

Mission Statement

We used the technique of pointilism to produce our mission statement art. We practised mixing different primary colours to produce secondary colours. We then produced portarits using this technique.

School Council Elections 2023

Well done to everyone who took part in the school council elections and put themselves forward to be a school councilor. The standard was very high this year and it was a very difficult job for the children to decide who to vote for. After listening to each candidates' manifesto, all of the class went to the polling station to cast their votes. It was a very close run thing. Congratulations to our three new year 4 councilors!
