Cultural Capital in History

In the context of history, cultural capital refers to the knowledge, skills, and experiences that children bring to their learning and understanding of history.

Cultural capital is an important aspect of history education at St Robert Bellarmine because it can help to broaden children's horizons and enhance their knowledge of the world. Children who have more cultural capital are more likely to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of history, which can motivate them to pursue history as a subject or career in the future.

We aim to develop cultural capital in our students by providing a range of experiences and opportunities to learn about history. It includes the cultural experiences linked to the past such as  visiting museums, exposure to different texts steeped in history, visits to historically significant locations and being aware of the history around them and beyond in their daily lives. We want our pupils to develop a sense of pride in their history but also recognise the many things that there are to learn from the past.

Overall, developing cultural capital in history is important for providing children with the skills and experiences they need to become informed, creative, and culturally aware individuals.
