Cultural Capital in Mathematics

In the context of mathematics, cultural capital refers to the knowledge, skills, and experiences that children bring to their learning and understanding of maths.

Cultural capital is an important aspect of maths education at St Robert Bellarmine because it can help to broaden children's horizons and enhance their knowledge of world around them. Children who have more cultural capital are more likely to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of maths, which can motivate them to pursue maths as a subject or career in the future.

We aim to develop cultural capital in our students by encouraging students to apply their mathematical knowledge and skills to solve complex problems. Problem-solving activities can help students to develop critical thinking skills, which are highly valued in many professional settings. We can help students to see the relevance and importance of maths by showing how mathematical concepts and skills are used in everyday life and in various fields such as science, engineering, and finance. We also use real-life examples of mathematical concepts and applications to make maths more engaging and relevant to students.

Overall, developing cultural capital in maths is important for providing children with the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to become informed, creative, and culturally aware individuals.
