Eco-Champions
Our Geography Curriculum Champions and Year 6 ambassadors lead our school as Eco-Champions. We have a number of exciting initiatives planned to ensure that our school is being as eco-friendly as possible.
Our Eco Champions help to care for our school environment: they help others to follow our initiatives, monitor our energy use in the school and encourage teachers and children to recycle and more.
In order to help our Eco-Champions understand how best to help our school, a survey was completed by all children from Year 2 - Year 6 and used to plan forward.
The areas that we are focusing on this year are:
- Transport use
Our Eco-Champions will encourage walking to school, using the car less, cycling where
possible and getting public transport which are all great ways to support this aim. We will be supporting our School Council during Road Safety Week.
- Energy use
We will have Eco-Champions in charge of making sure each class switches off their lights and
electronics each day and that they also shut the doors to keep our classrooms warm. Plus lots
more!
- Reducing water use
Our Eco-Champions will be encouraging children to bring reusable water bottles into school
as opposed to disposable bottles. We will also make sure everyone is conscious of the water
they use when washing their hands.
-Reducing waste
We want our school to recycle as much as possible so will have Eco-Champions encouraging
classes to do this in school and at home. We also have our Trashion show coming up to
highlight the issues with fast fashion and excessive waste.
-Reducing litter
Our Y6 litter monitors will lead this with support from the rest of our school to ensure we
look after our school grounds and the local area. We would love to see you getting involved
with this at home too!
- Sustainable living
Each class will be planting and growing food this year in numerous spaces around the school
grounds. We want to encourage our children to understand the importance of shopping local
where possible. This initiative will also increase children's scientific knowledge and continue
to develop their environmental awareness.
September 2022 Eco-Champions Survey Results
Our whole school came together to celebrate our annual Trashion Show. The focus of the Trashion Show is to draw attention to the issues surrounding fast fashion. Each child recycled an item of clothing and improved it for the show. Our Eco-Champions led the way in helping our school reduce waste and become more aware of where they are getting their clothes from.
Our Eco-Champions have worked with their ambassador classes to encourage them to take part in the Christmas Eco-Challenge being led by Southport Eco-Centre. We can't wait to see how many entries are school gets and also hope that the winner comes from St Robert Bellarmine!
Living Sustainably
Each class planted a range of seeds, bulbs and plants in early Spring and have started to harvest and enjoy the fruits of their labour!
