English - Storybarn Trip

Year 1 had a wonderful time on our trip to The Storybarn! We loved exploring the park using all our senses - spotting colourful leaves, listening to the rustling trees, smelling mint and lavender and even saying hello to some friendly squirrels! We played fun games and listened to an exciting story in the park before heading inside The Storybarn. There, we went on a dinosaur body part hunt, created our very own stories and made brilliant monster bookmarks to take home! What a magical, creative day full of imagination and adventure!

Maths

In Maths, we have been using 2D shapes to create pictures and models. We identified the different shapes we used and explained why we chose them to represent certain objects. We also linked this to our story in English – Room on the Broom – by creating shape pictures based on the characters and items from the story.

PE

We have been running the Daily Mile each day to keep healthy and build our fitness. It helps us stay active, improves our wellbeing and helps us feel more energised for our learning.

History

For Black History Month, we learned about Bessie Coleman. We explored the timeline of her life and discovered how she was a brave and determined woman who became the first African American and Native American female pilot. Her story inspired us to believe in ourselves and to never give up on our dreams.

RE

We have been learning all about the creation story and how God made the Earth and all the beautiful things in it. We discussed the many ways we can care for our planet. As part of our learning, we used tissue paper to create a representation of the world. We also traced around our hands and created pictures on them to show how we can take responsibility for looking after our Earth.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

We bought delicious cakes as part of our coffee morning for Macmillan. Thank you so much for all of our generous donations, we really appreciate it!

Hello Yellow

We wore yellow to support Young Minds' Hello Yellow Day. We wanted to show people that no one is alone and we can help and support each other to have happy and healthy minds.

Enchanted Forest

In Art, we have been learning how to use lines to make hatching and cross-hatching. We took this learning into the Enchanted Forest, where we collected sticks and used them to make our own hatching and cross-hatching patterns outside.

Design and Technology

We had a Design and Technology workshop with Steph where we created fantastic Room on the Broom pictures with levers and sliders. We had so much fun and enhanced lots of skills!

Science

We have been busy exploring the signs of autumn during our outdoor hunt! We spotted colourful leaves, bare branches and even discovered some more unusual autumn treasures right here on our school grounds, including conkers, pine cones and mushrooms! The children loved being nature detectives and learning about the changing season.

Design and Technology

In Design and Technology, we have been exploring how things move and slide! We have started practising our cutting, sticking and paper weaving skills to help us create moving pictures and mechanisms.

Enchanted Forest

We have been combining Science and Maths in the Enchanted Forest! The children explored the seasonal change from summer to autumn, noticing changes in the weather, trees and learning about hibernation. We worked in groups to collect natural materials and we created cosy homes for small creatures to hibernate in. In Maths, we collected natural objects and compared amounts using words like “more than/ greater than” and “less than”. We also love our free time where we can explore the forest, play and discover nature all around us. A magical way to learn and explore!

Mission Display

We looked at Kandinsky’s circle artwork to inspire our own vibrant and beautiful creations for our Mission display. The children used bold colours and shapes to express themselves just like the artist! We are God's Work of Art.
