Welcome to Year 3

But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

Tolerance and Respect

We have been learning about British Values and that we have them to try to keep everybody safe. For our assembly, we focussed on Tolerance and Respect. We learnt that tolerance means showing respect for others who are a different, race, religion, age or gender. We demonstrated that's it's ok to have a different opinion to others, but we should also respect other people's views and opinions. Our important messages are..

'Be the change you would like to see in the world'

'Compassion and tolerance are not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength' - Dalai Lama

World Book Day

For World Book Day this year, each child was invited to bring in their favourite book to share with their class. We spent some time in our lovely new reading room and read our books. Later on we performed the poem 'Lost for Words' by Jay Hulme. We just couldn't stop reading (even during gymnastics!)

Equality & Diversity

We have been learning about equality and diversity. We read the story of the two monsters and how each thought that they were right and the other was wrong and they just couldn't see things from the other's point of view. We realised that just because one person thinks they are right, it doesn't always mean that the other person is wrong. We all need to remember, equality is when we make sure that everyone is treated fairly. It does not mean that everyone has to be treated the same. We all agreed that we should everyone should learn to respect other people's viewpoints.

Trashion Show - D.T.

The whole school were challenged to take an old item and create a new product from it to help tackle the problem of sustainability and recycling. We had bags, t-shirts, dresses, scarves, shorts, headbands and capes! It was a brilliant way to show that we can be more sustainable and friendly to our environment by recycling our old items into something new. Year 3 you had the best moves strutting down that catwalk!

Inside Out Day

Everyone was invited to wear an item of clothing inside out to promote children's mental health awareness week. We wanted to show that how you look on the outside, doesn't always reflect what you are feeling on the inside. We discussed how important it is to talk to somebody about how you are feeling and that everybody has a voice. Y3 took part in a nationwide assembly discussing children's mental health and how we can support each other. The theme this year was 'This is My Place'.

Levers and Linkages - D.T.

We had Steph O'Donnell in to help us make puppets using sliders, levers and linkages. First we  looked at some ready made products then designed our own. We had to look at a front view and a back view of the puppet and we used moving and fixed pivots in our products. We had to evaluate our end product and say what we liked and what we would change next time. We really enjoyed designing and making our own!

Christmas

Year 3 enjoyed a special visit from Santa and enjoyed Christmas party day!

Christmas

Year 3 enjoyed lots of activities in the lead up to Christmas! They made cards, decorated our class tree, did a Santa Dash and boogied their way around the playground in their lovely jumpers!

Light - Science

Y3's science topic was Light and Shadows. We investigated how the distance of the light source from the object can affect the length of the shadow and made observations and recorded them. Then Year 3 were challenged to investigate which materials would make the best shadow puppets. They tested a range of material and gave reasons why it would or would not be good to use for a puppet. Then they made the puppet and judged it against the rest of the criteria in their challenge brief.

Friendship Fortnight - PSHE

Once again we supported the national anti-bullying campaign by wearing odd socks as a symbol of uniqueness and to promote acceptance of diversity. This was linked to all the work we did during our 'friendship fortnight.' This year, the theme was Power for Good.

Cave Art

We created our own cave art using pastels and paint. We were able to describe lines of various thickness and weight, used charcoals to create value and made brown using primary colours. We used some old magazines to create collages of brown. Then we looked at some cave art that had been discovered in France and Spain to help us with creating our own pictures. Our finished pictures are all up on display in our school hall for everyone to enjoy.

Remembrance Day - Collective Worship

We gathered to honour and pay our respects to those who lost their lives in wars and their families. We learnt about the significance of wearing a red poppy and why it is so important to remember. We said prayers and at 11am, observed a 2 minute silence and reflected quietly.

Say No to Racism - PSHE

We wore red and blue to say 'NO' to racism. We discussed how everyone should be treated fairly and that we should treat others the way we would like to be treated. Racism does not have a voice in our school community and we will not tolerate it in any form.

Harvest Festival - Collective Worship

Year 3 led our school collective worship for the Harvest Festival. We gathered together and thought about how we can support others and our actions, no matter how small they seem, can make a big difference to other people in our community. We thanked God for the farmers and their harvest, for the Sun and the rain. We also thanked our families who donated lots of items for the foodbank to help people less fortunate than ourselves in our local area. Thank you for your kindness everyone.

Hello Yellow - PSHE

To raise awareness of mental health we wore yellow and discussed ways in which we can feel less alone and have positive mental health. We recognised that it's so important to understand how we're feeling and find ways to feel better or support others who are struggling.

Art - Painting

For our art topic about cave paintings we created our own colour wheels using primary colours. Then we mixed primary colours with secondary colours. We painted strips of blocks trying to get lighter or darker each time.

P.E/Games

Some Year 3 and 4 children were invited to take part in a Footgolf session along with other schools across South Sefton. They had a brilliant time and were commended for their teamwork and resilience. Well done!

Learn and Present - English/History

Y3 spent the day with Altru Drama learning all about Stone Age Britain as part of our History topic. Children helped write and then performed a play for the rest of the school based on what they had learnt in just one day. The boys and girls remembered lots and gave a great performance at the end of the day.

School Council Elections - Democracy

All pupils were invited to  to put themselves forward for the important job of class councillor by submitting their form to state why they would be the best person to represent our class. Candidates were shortlisted to three boys and three girls by council leaders in Year 6. Each person voted on who they would like to be our class councillors for the year and votes were counted, counted again and then verified to see who had gained the most votes!
