Reproduction in Flowering Plants
In our Science topic we are learning about how flowers reproduce. We learnt about the different parts of a flower, their names and how their function in reproduction. We dissected a flower to help us with our learning.
Culture and art
Year five and Year 6 enjoyed a Liverpool art and culture trip. We went on an open top bus tour of our city to learn about the history of Liverpool and more about the beautiful buildings we often walk past. As part of the trip we stopped at the Walker Art Gallery for a workshop on the different styles of art there. We looked at the Victorian pieces of art and how they were inspired by myths and legends. We also learnt about some modern pieces such as Lowry’s Liverpool Waterfront and abstract landscapes. Finally, we looked at a sculpture by Henry Moore, who created this piece during World War I. Instead of showing the warrior as strong and powerful, he is depicted as vulnerable and falling as if shielding himself from attack. It shows that there are no winners in war.
Ancient Egyptian Trip
We went the World Museum to learn more about the Ancient Egyptians. We met an archeologist, who taught us more about mummification. We also looked at the exhibition and the artefacts they had there.
Fraction Museums
To start our topic on fractions, the children used our maths equipment to show their fraction in a range of ways, including equivalent fractions. This work will help us as we work through our unit of work on fractions.
Printing
In this unit of work we have been working on printing. We created a monoprint and then layered other prints on top using a stencil we created ourselves. We also added another layer to our prints by drawing on top to create an interesting piece of artwork. We had to think carefully about the composition of the piece to ensure that we were drawing in the correct place.
Trashion Show 2024
Thank-you to everyone who took part in the Trashion show, turning their rubbish or old clothing into some brand new! We hit the catwalk and showed off our new creations,.
Science Escape Rooms
Year five had to work together in teams to use all their science knowledge to solve the clues and unlock the boxes before time ran out. They worked well as a team and some of us even beat the clock!
The Ancient Egyptians Play In a Day
Altru Drama came to visit school and worked with Year 5 on a Play In A Day performance based on life in Ancient Egyptian times. We learnt about how the River Nile was vital for the success of the Ancient Egyptians and how the society was organised into different classes of people. The farmers and slaves were the largest class and they were led by their ruler the Pharaoh. We also learnt about the Ancient Egyptians' belief in the afterlife and that they mummified the dead!
Liverpool Schools' Advent Service
Year 5 went the Cathedral to watch the annual Advent Service. We watched the performance which told the story of Jesus's birth. We also prayed together and sang Christmas hymns together. The children of Year 5 gave generously to help other children who may not be as fortunate as ourselves. Thank you!
Irreversible Changes
We learnt about irreversible changes in our science lessons. We closely observed what happened when we mixed citric acid and bicarbonate of soda together. We could hear fizzing, we could see bubbles and foam forming, the smell changed and when we took the temperature we observed that it had dropped. We knew a chemical reaction had taken place and we would be unable to reverse this change.
Reversible Changes
The children used all the knowledge they have developed over this unit of work to reverse the changes and separate out 4 different materials from a mixture. We used what we know about magnetic materials, filtration and evaporation to be complete the task.
Children came to school wearing odd socks to remind us all that it is our differences that make us special and they should be celebrated rather than divide us. We were supporting anti-bullying week by wearing our odd socks with pride!
School Council Elections
The children took part in the school council elections. There we lots of worthy candidates, who had fantastic ideas and it was a difficult job for our voters to decide who to pick. On Wednesday, we headed to the Polling Station to cast our votes and put them into the Ballot Box. Well done to everyone who put themselves forward and congratulations to this year's councillors.
Footprints In The Sand
As part of our topic on Ourselves we have been learning that God is like a loving parent who is always there for us especially in times of need. We went to our school's spiritual garden to look at the footprints on the ground and read the poem Footprints In The Sand. We reflected on how God is walking beside us as we journey through life and during those times we need him the most he will carry us.
CAFOD Workshop
We were delighted to welcome a visitor from CAFOD this week to teach us all about their charitable work overseas. We learnt about how we can support CAFOD in helping those most in need around the world. We also learnt about the keys in Catholic Social Teaching that guide us in working for the good of others.
Collective Worship
During our collective worship we remembered our work during our R.E. topic, we also reflected on what we had learnt. We took the opportunity to give thanks to God for the talents, qualities and gifts He has given us. We thought about how we can develop and not waste them.
Hardness Test
We have been learning about the different properties of materials in science. We devised a scratch test using a nail and investigated how hard the materials were.
Negative Numbers
In maths we have been learning to count beyond zero. We built a negative number Numicon staircase and used it to help us find the difference between positive and negative numbers.
Sculpture
In art we have crated sculptures using cardboard and Modroc. We used the shape of the River Mersey as our inspiration and contour lines to create our sculptures.
Cam Toys
In DT we designed and made a moving toy. We created a cam mechanism so that our toy would move up and down and round and round (linear and rotary motion). We made a frame from wood and the slider and axle from wooden dowels. We created the cam and follower from cardboard. They really turned out well!
