Altru Drama came to visit school and worked with Year 5 on a Play In A Day performance based on life in Ancient Egyptian times. We learnt about how the River Nile was vital for the success of the Ancient Egyptians and how the society was organised into different classes of people. The farmers and slaves were the largest class and they were led by their ruler the Pharaoh. We also learnt about the Ancient Egyptians' belief in the afterlife and that they mummified the dead!
Year Five attended the annual Advent service in the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. We enjoyed watching the performance which retold the Nativity story through singing, acting and dance and of course we loved seeing a real donkey! We would also like to say a huge thank-you to all the Year Five children and families for your generous donation of gifts, which will be given to children less fortunate than ourselves this Christmas.
In maths, we worked with Numicon to retrieve our previous learning on symmetry and made some symmetrical patterns. After a little bit of practise we created patterns that were symmetrical horizontally, vertically and diagonally.
Thank-you to our Year 5 children, who led a beautiful class worship for this year's Remembrance Day. The children wrote prayers to thank God for the bravery of service men and women past and present.
Year 5 worked with an expert DT teacher to design and make a moving toy using a cam mechanism. The children learnt about different cams and the motion they create and chose to make an eccentric cam, round cam or snail cam, depending on their design. We also learnt how to use hacksaws safely to create a wooden frame for the cam toy.
Year Five have been working on negative numbers and built a Numicon staircase to help answer difference questions. Well done Year 5 excellent maths work.
Year Five have been working on six-digit numbers and using knowledge of place value we compared them. We made a maths museum for our 6-digit numbers and played a tense game of Nice or Nasty to compare them.
The children have been learning about reversible changes in science and used filtration to separate out a mixture of stones, soil and water. Well done Year Five!
In science we invetsigated which materials were soluble and which were insoluble. We mixed each material with water observed what happened. We then grouped the materials depending on their solubility.
Year Five welcomed Katie and Pauline from The Rivers and Canals Trust to take part in a workshop all about rivers and their features. We learnt about the upper course, middle course and lower course of the river. We also identified key featurs of a river such as the source, mouth, menader, oxbow lake, watefall, tributary, floodplain and human features such as bridges, ports and farmland. Our models were brilliant!
The children headed to the polling station this week to vote in the new school council for this year. The candidates were all very strong and it was a difficult decision. Well done to all those who put themselves forward and congratulations to our new Year 5 school councillors.
For our mission display, they children took inspiration from the famous artist Frida Khalo. The children used oil pastels and collage materials to create their own interpretations of her famous self-portraits. They did a fantastic job!
