Science

Electricity

In our science lessons we have been learnign about electrical circuits. We have learnt how to light a bulb, make a buzzer sound and run a motor and we have learnt how we can control these when we add a switch to our circuit. We also designed our own switches and sent messages using Morse code.

Technology

Trashion Show

"In year 4 we don't do fashion - we are fashion!"

We all strutted our stuff on the catwalk with our recycled designs. The challenge had been to take an old piece of clothing and turn it into something new. Some great creations were on show.

Technology

Textile Pouches

We worked with Steph to design and make textile pouches. We began by looking at different pouches that used an applique design. We then practised different stitches before we decided upon the ones we wanted to use. With the help of Steph, we then designed and made our own pouches using felt. Finally, we evaluated our designs against the success criteria we set out. We had a great day and we are all very proud of the outcomes.

Maths

Formal Subtraction

We began exploring the subtraction of 4-digit numbers and recording using a compact and efficient method during our maths lessons. We used place value counters and place value charts to make different minuends and looked at how we used exchanges to help us subtrsct.

Play-in-a-Day

Macbeth

We started the term working with Dave from Altru Drama who introduced us to the Shakespeare play Macbeth. We learnt about the history of the play, the curse as well as the characters involved and the plot. We all took on different roles and performed for the rest of the school at the end of the day. It was a great way to start our new English text.

Collective Worship

Remembrance Day

We held a collective worship in class on the theme of Remembrance Day. We thought about the brave people who made the greatest sacrifice for our country.

Jesus said, “Greater love has no man than this; that he lay down his life for his friends.”
Soldiers have shown this great love, by dying to keep our country safe.

Let us pray together:
God our Father, your Son Jesus gave up His life to free us from the power of sin and death.
He showed us that the greatest love is in giving up one’s life for others.
Today we remember those who fought and died for our freedom.
We ask you to bless and console them together with their families.
Help us to understand the sacrifices they made in leaving their loved ones to face the horrors
of war.
We pray that we never forget those who fought, suffered and died that we might have the
freedom and peace we enjoy today.
May we never forget their generosity.
Amen

Maths

Place Value

As part of our place value work exploring 4-digit numbers,

we used digit cards and place value charts to order and

compare numbers. We had different problems to solve and we had to find different solutions to each problem.

PSHE

Hello Yellow

On Friday we wore something yellow to come to school. This was so we could raise awareness about looking after our mental health and wellbeing. As you can see from the smiles on our faces, we had a lovely day! We talked about the importance of looking out for our mental and physical health and explored some of the things that we can do to help.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

We celebrated the Macmillan Coffee Morning by bringing in cakes and selling them in class. Our school councillors organised everything and we really enjoyed these treats. Thank you to everyone involved for your amazing generosity.

History

Mere Tun Trip

As part of our topic on history topic about the Anglo-Saxons, Year 4 recently visited Martin Mere and their settlement of Mere Tun. Here we experienced life in Anglo-Saxon times. During the visit we went foraging in the woods for materials that would be useful in camp, we weaved a pig pen from willow, we learnt how to thatch a roof using reeds and we learnt to defend the village from Viking attack. We all had an amazing day and learnt so much.

Maths

Nice & Nasty

We played a game today based on 4-digit numbers.

Game 1 Take turns to throw a 0-9 dice  and decide which of your four cells to fill. Do this four times each until all your cells are full. Whoever has the largest four digit number wins.

Game 2 Whoever makes the smallest four digit number wins.

Game 3 Set a target to aim for. Then throw the dice four times each and work out how far each of you is from the target number.

British Values

Democracy

Year 4 presented a short assembly about the British value of Democracy. We explained how democracy started in Ancient Greece; how it works in Britain today and how we use a democratic process when we elect our new school council at the start of each year.

Maths

The Calendar Problem

We were given 12 month cards that looked

similar to this. However none of the cards

had the name of the months on. Our job

was to attempt to name each month, order

them correctly and rebuild the calendar.

this. Where would you start? What do you

know about the number of days in each

month?

School Council Elections 2025

Well done to everyone who took part in the school council elections and put themselves forward to be a school councilor. The standard was very high this year and it was a very difficult job for the children to decide who to vote for. After listening to each candidates' ideas, all of the class went to the polling station to cast their votes. It was a very close run thing. Congratulations to our two new year 4 councilors!
